Role of Social Media in Extremism: A Perspective for Understanding ‘New’ Militancy in Kashmir

17 Jun 2022, 15:00

Description

The official reports of the Indian government recorded escalation in local militancy in Kashmir
Valley. The numbers of local militants had spiked from 16 in 2013 to 218 in 2018. An official
report published in The Telegraph (2016) stated the sharp increase in accessibility to Social Media
in Kashmir Valley. In parallel, the Social Media presence of the local militants, their increasing
local support in the valley and the Indian government’s frequent temporary revocation of Internet
services raises a research question: Are Social Media platforms playing a meaningful role in
militancy? This research paper explains a theoretical perspective to answer the research question.
The research argues that Social Media help militants – a) to create local support (sympathisers)
and b) to radicalise youths.
