What is the status of global environmentalism within international society: Analysis of Robert Falkner’s Environmentalism and Global International Society

15 Jun 2022, 15:00

Description

From the very beginning of the definition of international society, common rules and the fact that states are conscious of their limits due to these rules show the importance accorded to the international norms by English School thinkers. The emphasis on the rules of international law is one of the important features of the English school, which provides a normative framework for the successful operation of any large and complex social arrangement. Environmental stewardship is another candidate of the emerging primary institutions that draws the attention of English school scholars. Falkner questions the development of global environmentalism and its impact on the social structure of international relations. Falkner sees global environmental responsibility as one of the fundamental norms of international society and considers that it represents the expansion of the normative horizon of international society.
As it is an emerging institution, global environmentalism has still handicaps from the pluralist logic of international coexistence and is not yet fully considered under a solidarist logic of cooperation. The reason behind the rise of its institutionalization is the “common fate” and “responsibility” approaches to environmental problems but it is challenged by other primary institutions, namely by sovereignty and the market. So the question arises: Where does environmental stewardship stand, as a primary institution of international society? The new emerging environmental globalism would be able to really “emerge”?
