Description
The Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated trends to further digitise the classroom in higher education. Hybrid teaching is no longer uncommon, social media apps are regularly being used for teaching and assessments, simulations that include online elements are increasingly taking place, and online international learning projects are making their way into International Relations curricula. While not all developments in the last few years have significantly improved the learning experience of students, research has shown that using digital means can supplement higher education teaching, as it not only speaks to visual and kinesthetic learners but it also provides for an active and affective learning experience. Pedagogical contributions to IR have been at the forefront of this development but so far the discipline neglected opportunities that augmented reality (AR) offers for teaching and assessment. This paper aims to address this shortcoming by exploring how AR can be used in IR teaching, how it can be further internationalised through the use of AR, and what AR offers to diversify assessment.
