Description
The global rise of New Right populist governments in the last decades represents one of the most impactful political developments of the twentieth-first century. However, the impact of those governments’ ideas and approaches on foreign policy and diplomacy remains to be evaluated. To investigate that, this research examines the Brazilian case, specifically the effect of Jair Bolsonaro’s New Right nationalist government on Brazilian foreign policy and diplomacy. By applying discourse analysis to foreign policy-related speeches elaborated during the Bolsonaro administration and interviewing Brazilian diplomats and politicians, this paper contributes to the still incipient literature on the impact of the New Right on foreign policy and diplomacy, and on the relationship between politicians and diplomats, as well as norms and practices in international relations. Additionally, generalisable conclusions from the Brazilian case will contribute to understanding the phenomenon in other countries/regions.
