Racialised unknowingness at EU borders

21 Jun 2023, 10:45

Description

Nobody knows how many people die or disappear while migrating precariously. Statistics on migrant deaths and disappearances are consistently unreliable, often little more than informed guesses. In the twenty-first century, with all its movement-tracking technologies, humans still go missing without a trace. This unknowingness about migrant deaths and disappearances is racialised, hiding the violent excesses that take place at EU borders. In response to this lack of knowledge, different actors have taken up the task of counting and tracing missing ‘non-citizens’. This paper explores their forms of knowledge production around the disappearance of people ‘on the move’, wondering what role they play in the governance of migration and the contestation of border violence.
