Placing Women at the Center of Academia; Narrating the story of Women Academicians

21 Jun 2023, 13:15

Description

Historically women have not been given much agency as individual subjects or public visibility and have more often than not been reduced to private nurturers. This also applied broadly to the field of academics; academia, ever since its emergence, have largely dominated by men. History is reflective, critical and can be expressed through narratives; women, for that matter, have not been allowed even to enter this domain of higher education. The landscape of the academy has always been conceived, painted and defined by the men. They have assigned themselves the most interesting, important and heroic parts, giving women supportive and subordinate roles.
This paper focuses on bringing out the perspectives of women’s role in academia to existing interpretations of certain narratives. Looking at the historical narratives by women would help one understand if the texts help them belong or participate in the communities that have excluded them. The paper also intends to advance the argument about the exclusivity of women in academia not only in developing countries but also in the developed world. In order to do so, it primarily draws on the broad theoretical premise held by critics who say the academia is gendered biased along with various other cases in the domain of academics.
