The Global Entanglements of Anti-Natalist Violence

23 Jun 2023, 10:45

Description

Anti-natalist violence such as forced and coerced sterilizations of ‘undesirable’ populations exists across temporal and geographical boundaries, from eugenics to ICE detention centres. Focusing on the state-sponsored forced sterilizations of women in Peru, I draw out the partial connections that relate instances of anti-natalist violence across the world. I focus on the underlying racial, gendered, and colonial logics, discourses, and imaginaries, as well as the material entanglements and circulations that connect anti-natalist violence across borders. With this framework, I explore how, far from being atomized events, anti-natalist violence hangs together through colonial histories and a continuum of gendered violence that re-produces gendered and racialized bodies as sterilizable. By doing so, I show how practices of anti-natalist violence are related to each other in intimate ways, making visible forced sterilizations as a form of political violence that operates globally in dissimilar yet partially connected ways.
