In the ever-evolving landscape of international relations in Africa there is a need for interdisciplinary research perspectives informed by evidence-based design. Yet, there is limited emphasis on the use of experimental design in examining interventions, assessing what works and the ways forward to inform gaps and better policies. This session aims to introduce attendees to creative methodologies such as experimental designs and the basics of randomised control trials (RCTs). This will be is useful for those interested in research on peacekeeping, and international relations policies affecting the continent. The session will address the types of research questions appropriate for RCTs, what is required to conduct and design an RCT study among others.
Dr Tarela Ike - Tarela is a Senior Lecturer at Teesside University, UK and the Course Leader for the MA International Relations (including Applied route). She is also a multiple award-winning researcher, and her research interests include deradicalisation, countering violent extremism, peacekeeping, and the use of interdisciplinary approaches in addressing challenges to complex offenders’ reintegration into society and reintegration in post-conflict settings. Tarela has been actively engaged in leading and co-leading the design and conduct of experimental research in a myriad of context, including post-conflict settings.
