Abstract: Energy geopolitics has changed its connotation as the energy transition. In the fossil fuel era, the study of energy geopolitics is conducted around the great power change caused by energy demand and supply and the energy security affected by the turbulent politics in energy export countries and transportation junctions. When it comes to the renewable energy era, the power change by supply and demand relatively decreased, as well as energy security was enhanced. However, a new element turned up, which is the energy governance challenged by the rising market. China as an important renewable energy producer and consumer, has challenged the renewable energy trade, caused a greater green technology race, and is seeking more influence in energy governance. China recently published its new hydrogen policy, it’s a significant move in China’s renewable energy development. This paper analyzed China’s hydrogen development from an energy geopolitics perspective, and examined its implication in power change, energy security and energy governance, finding that China’s hydrogen development will improve the interdependence with East Asian countries, trigger greater green race with hydrogen-advanced countries, increase China’s energy security in the long term, and provides China with a pathway to get more engaged in energy governance.
