Description
Post the year 2020, there is a growing trend in political conflicts where women have been suffering in silence from the rhetoric of high politics and masculine reporting. One such case is the conflict in Myanmar, where several tribes, including Chin, are subject to the state’s atrocities since the military coup of 2021. To escape from such atrocities, Chin women refugees have been taking shelter in the neighbouring Indian states of Mizoram and Manipur. However, with unclear Indian laws on refugees, their security and safety are questionable.
This study attempts to understand factors for this contradictory treatment of the Chin refugees arriving in India and tries to capture the lived experiences of the Chin refugee women. Further, the study will capture how these women envision their future in India. Lastly, the paper will look at the role of Indian Chin women in addressing the concerns and causes of the Chin refugee women. This paper argues that women refugees belonging to the same tribe from a conflict zone may experience different treatment from the destination state.
