‘Walking on a Rope’: The Experiences of Asylum Seekers Navigating Multiple Border Spaces Inside and Outside Europe

20 Jun 2025, 15:00

Description

This paper examines the multi-layered experiences of asylum seekers navigating various border spaces following the 2015-2016 European refugee ‘crisis’. It explores three key dimensions of bordering practices: external, internal, and everyday borders. The first two layers focus on the European Union’s external policies aimed at managing migration in the Middle East and Africa, and the internal policies controlling secondary movements within Europe. The third layer investigates the everyday borders faced by asylum seekers upon reaching the UK as their final destination. Drawing on twenty-one semi-structured interviews with asylum seekers, refugees, and NGO workers and the EU Commission policy documents, this study highlights their lived experiences and insights on these multiple border spaces . The findings contribute to the ongoing scholarly debate by offering a multi-perspectival approach to understanding borders, aligning with the frameworks of Rumford (2014).
