Description

Despite much scholarship on the special anglo defence and security relationship, empirically motivated studies using data drawn from informal defence and security arrangements remain absent. This research explores that lacunae in applying a rational institutionalist framework to study bilateral security agreements signed between the Canada & the UK over the past seventy-five years building on previous work by the author (Kimball 2017, 2022). This research will identify the number of agreements linking the two partners in defence and security matters runs crucially through the United States as a third power and the essential link provided by NATO. In the absence of an engaged US and capable, present NATO, risks and weaknesses would arise on a bilateral level. An exploration of the implications for transatlantic and European security in the context of NATO concludes the analysis.
