Protecting the Rights of the Minority Groups: the Case of the Christian Community in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq

5 Jun 2026, 13:15

Description

The Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) is home to many religious, ethnic, and linguistic minorities. Most of these groups, like Christian communities, have deep historical roots in this geographical area. They are an integral part of the social and cultural landscape of the region. This research tries to evaluate the role of political and legal institutions of the KRI in protecting the collective rights of the Christian community. In doing this, the author utilizes the qualitative method through gathering data from the primary and secondary resources to support his research analysis. Data collection has been collected through performing semi-structured interviews with relevant figures from the Christian elites as well as the KRG’s authorities. The author concluded that conforming democratic governance entails the KRI providing the actual representation of the Christian community in the political and legal institutions through reforming the current domestic politics and amending the current laws or enacting new laws to guarantee minority rights protection.
Key words: Kurdistan Region of Iraq, democratic principles, minority groups, collective rights, Christian community, misrepresentation.
