With the ongoing crisis around Iran and in light of the blockage of the Hormuz Strait, international trade has no other way than to readjust the main maritime routes towards the Suez. This, in its turn, highlights the issue of a dangerous passage through the Aden Gulf that is the point of entry that leads towards the Suez channel. Over 30000 vessels pass the Gulf of Aden annually, making it an important transport hub in the Indian Ocean and a gateway towards the Suez Canal. At the same time, international media present regular reports of kidnappings and attacks in this area.
The problem of maritime piracy in the Gulf of Aden presents an interdisciplinary research area for regional, global, economic, and maritime law studies. Academic interest fluctuates
around both theoretical and practical issues surrounding this issue, and yet it remains unresolved. This work questions the status of pirates as possible actors in the regional security system. At this stage, it is important to assess the question of whether maritime
piracy is now an international security trigger in light of the blockages of the Hormuz Strait, since such identification will assist decision-makers in developing appropriate response and prevention policies.
