Research observatories: creating spaces for an engaged and affective pedagogy of autonomy

Description

What are research observatories and what social role can they play in training new researchers in developing countries? In this proposal, we suggest that this type of institution can and should function as a holistic training space for the personal and academic development of its members. Drawing inspiration from authors such as Paulo Freire (pedagogy of autonomy) and bell hooks (engaged pedagogy), we argue that, contrary to the excess of technologies as a methodological resource for learning, undergraduates and postgraduates respond better to affection, attention and close guidance. This proposal is based on the experience of Brazilian undergraduate and graduate students in International Relations who have been researchers at the United States Political Observatory (OPEU) in Brazil for the last three years.
In this space, researchers receive comprehensive training, which includes the development of writing – in content and in its various forms and styles – and analytical capacity – with the constant stimulus of autonomy in doing and thinking – as well as training in the routines of academic praxis, with its demands, expectations, habitus, rites and singularities. Empirically, it was found that individual accompaniment in this micro-community of shared interests is more effective in developing their self-esteem and intellectual power and creates a solid sense of belonging and a preference for cooperation. By providing a more meaningful and enjoyable experience, this possible place of affection, inclusion and self-empowerment, knowledge production and autonomy reinforces interest and connection with the academic path.
