Description

This article aims at analyzing the recent terrorist attack orchestrated by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), in the Gaza Strip, on October 08, 2023, against Israel, as well their objectives, results and the effects of the Israeli counter-offensive, which has already lasted 8 months. Departing from Strategic Studies and International Relations perspectives on terrorism and counter-terrorism, understood as a tactic within a broader political and military strategy, the argument is that the attack could be better comprehended if situated within that broader political context of Arab-Israeli conflicts, which could be traced back to multiple historical episodes and events. “The Question of Palestine”, as discussed by Edward Said, refers to the very process of creation of the State of Israel and the subsequent deterritorialization of the Palestinian people, including a wide range of forms of violence, whether on the hands of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), or by civilian militias. Thus, the aim of revisiting this question is not meant to simply review specialized literature or suggest a new interpretation of the conflict from the standpoint of Strategic Studies and contemporary conceptualization of terrorism. It is meant, above all, to provide a simultaneously more comprehensive and more singular interpretation to this specific act of terrorist violence (“Operation al-Aqsa Storm”) from the perspective of solidarity to botg Israeli and Palestinian civilians, though critical of the Zionist colonial and illegal occupation project, terrorism, and right-wing extremism.
